Hey everyone, my name is Josh and I have grand aspirations of building a kitkamper for my 2016 Toyota Tacoma. I was looking at things like the Tune Outdoor so that's my inspiration. However I didn't want to spend $13,000+ on it so that led me down the rabbit trail that led to this. I'm not a big DIY person but I would like to be and this seemed doable (though I'm concerned he made it look deceptively easy). I love the idea of a rooftop tent but it feels claustrophobic which is why I like this style. Tools wise I have a handful of hand tools and 1 cheap drill. I know I'll probably end up buying stuff for this but I'm gonna try and keep it reasonable. Generally I like the design already done but there's definitely some modifications/changes I'd like to make to make it fit my needs/preferences.
I would like to do zipper windows/doors in the tent, I know this will require sowing but I found some videos of people doing it and I think I can make it work.
I want to try and install a vent in the ceiling for cook/heater/moisture.
Install lights in both sections of the camper.
Lengthen the bed portion that hangs over the cab by a little bit (maybe a foot or two) to keep the bed size and intrude less in the lower portion.
Create some way to access the cab from the camper through the back window.
I really liked the smoked windows in the Tune Outdoor to take in the scenery, so ideally some sort of windows on all sides, preferably maintaining privacy on the inside.
I want to lean on the electric side of things so I also want to install solar panels on the roof of the tent.
Possibly do something for insulation depending on how warm the tent stays with the current design.
Ideally build in some sort of mounting brackets so I can hang it on something and drive the truck out from under it, but that's not a deal breaker.
Again I'm not well versed in the world of DIY so I don't know how many of those things I'll be able to accomplish, but that's the goal. Any advice/recommendations are very much welcome. I really want this to be something that fits my needs/desires and that I can be proud of.
